Beat Cystitis Naturally

Question for Maryon: I had my first episode of cystitis two years ago, which was painful and unpleasant. Since I got married over a year ago and have since had repeated bouts of cystitis, especially before my period. I only used to suffer occasionally, but now I seem to be a regular visitor to my doctor's surgery in order to get my prescription for antibiotics. I live in dread of the symptoms, which is not doing a great deal for my love life. I am desperate to find a natural alternative to antibiotics and to know why I seem to be so susceptible? ~Suzanne

Maryons Answer:
Cystitis is caused by inflammation of the bladder due to either bacterial infection from the organism E. coli, which sometimes travels from the anus area, or from a mechanical disturbance. It is known as `the honeymoon syndrome` as it can be triggered by vigorous sexual activity, which apparently makes it thirteen times commoner in the general population than in nuns. Tight clothing, vaginal deodorants and disinfectants can also bring on symptoms, and caffeine may affect the muscles of the bladder making the irritation worse.

There are a number of self-help measures you can try. Firstly, Take care to wash yourself carefully with warm, unperfumed soapy water and chose unperfumed bath products, as allergies can develop, causing inflammation.

On the diet side, drink plenty of water throughout the day, adding a small amount of bicarbonate of soda, which will make your urine more alkaline. It's important to avoid sweet refined foods, including chocolate, and make sure you are having three wholesome meals each day. Replace caffeinated drinks like tea, coffee, cola and chocolate with natural alternatives. In addition, take the Cran-Biotic Formula, made by Vega (11.79 For 60 vegecaps), which provides a specific combination of natural antibacterial and antifungal agents, in the form of Lactobacillus Acidophilus and cranberry extract, aimed at keeping the micro flora in the bladder in balance, should help to promote the health of the urinary tract and ease the discomfort.
